A high school hockey player who lost three family members in a mass shooting last month has sent his team to the championship.

Colin Dorgan, the high school hockey player who lost three family members in a mass shooting at a Rhode Island rink last month, scored on a breakaway in double overtime to lift his Blackstone Valley Co-op team into the state final.

PROVIDENCE — Colin Dorgan is a hero. He skated through the neutral zone, took the overtime pass in stride and delivered his Blackstone Valley Schools hockey team a championship berth. Dorgan curled left after depositing the winner past Portsmouth in the Division II boys hockey semifinals at Schneider Arena.

Nearly a month after losing his mother, brother and grandfather following the Feb. 16 shooting during a Pawtucket, Rhode Island, high school hockey game, Colin Dorgan sent his team to the state title game with a double-overtime goal with 48.1 seconds remaining.
