New Year's Eve celebrations have been cancelled in a North Yorkshire city amid weather warnings for flooding and high winds for the county. Ripon City Council said a firework display and live entertainment to welcome in 2025 in the Market Square would no longer take place.

The new year has got off to a wet and windy start with much of the stormy conditions we saw in December continuing into January 1. There are two weather warnings currently in place for Wales for wind and rain.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds which was in place across Northern Ireland on New Year's Eve has ended. The Met Office alert came into effect at 06:00 GMT, lasting until 14:00. Gusts up to 50mph (80km/h) had been expected across many areas,

Heavy rain and snow will cause disruption across Scotland, according to the Met Office. New Year’s Day will see Glasgow starting 2025 with overcast skies and a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow showers.

The UK is set for a difficult start to 2025 as heavy rain, wind and snow are expected to cause travel disruption over the New Year period. Nearly every part of the country has been issued one or several yellow weather warning by the Met Office for between Monday and Thursday,

Heavy rain and high winds are causing disruption in much of the country, with blizzards forecast in Scotland and widespread cancellation of New Year's Eve events. Almost every part of the UK is covered by at least one of multiple Met Office weather warnings between Monday and Wednesday.

The Met Office had initially issued the yellow weather warning for 7am on New Year's Day, however the weather experts have pushed forward the warning to 12.15am
