Texas health officials reported 17 new measles cases on Tuesday, bringing the total confirmed cases since late January to 663. The state’s public health department estimates that fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases — about 1% — are “actively infectious.

The Texas Department of State Health Services reported Tuesday its measles cases, which date back to late January, had grown to 663 cases as of Tuesday, marking a jump of 17 cases since the state’s last update as 87 of the patients have been hospitalized while two school-aged children have been confirmed dead from the illness.

Nearly all measles infections seen during the Texas outbreak are among individuals who have not been vaccinated, or whose vaccination status is unknown.
