The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, located along the coast, reported that some places received up to 8 inches of snow as first responders urged drivers to stay off ice-covered roads. The wintry weather marked the first time it snowed on the Outer Banks barrier islands since 2018, according to WNCN and WAVY.

When you think of the Outer Banks, snow is not the first word to come to mind. But there have been times in the past where the pristine beaches, piers, lighthouses and landmarks get their share of white flurries.

It’s been a while since the North Carolina coast saw significant snowfall, but a storm moving through the state Tuesday night, Jan. 21, is expected to bring up to 8 inches in some places.
