An off-duty Chicago police sergeant spoke exclusively with ABC7 after helping rescue four people from a sinking boat on Lake Michigan after spotting a distress signal through dense fog over the weekend.

A fishing boat began to sink during a sudden storm that flooded it at Fish Lake. The family of seven on board all had life jackets on except the mother, Heather West.

Coast Guard crews attached flotation devices to a sunken boat in Lake Michigan and then inflated them, raising the boat above the water. The boat sank on Sunday during heavy fog and rain when the pumps could not keep up with the water.
