A reaction following a fire at a Georgia chemical plant Sunday morning forced evacuations, shelter-in-place advisories and road closures in the area, according to Rockdale County officials.

A chemical plant fire that ignited Sunday has left more than 90,000 residents of a Georgia county sheltering in place. The big picture: Air quality surveys detected chlorine, a harmful irritant, in the air emitting from the Conyers, Georgia, BioLab facility, prompting business and road closures across Rockdale County, an area east of Atlanta.

A fire broke out at a chemical plant just east of Atlanta Sunday, prompting officials to ask residents in the area to evacuate. At around 5 a.m., a sprinkler head malfunctioned at the BioLab plant in Conyers, "causing a mixture with a water reactive chemical," according to Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel.
