Russia is pushing back against threats from President Donald Trump to bomb Iran over how it handles its nuclear program, calling them "illegal and unacceptable."

Russia warned on Thursday against any attack on Iran's nuclear infrastructure as tensions grow with the United States over its nuclear program and after President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran if it doesn't reach a deal. Newsweek has reached out to the U.S. State Department for comment.

Russia said on Thursday that threats of military strikes against its ally Iran were unacceptable and warned that attacking the Islamic Republic could lead to potentially catastrophic results if nuclear installations were bombed.

Iran has now sent Khamenei’s response through its preferred mediator, the Sultanate of Oman. Iran’s letter is detailed and leaves the door open for negotiations, a source close to the Iranian establishment told me,
