Here are steps to prevent the spread of norovirus in Michigan this season: Wash your hands well and often, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces. Stay home when sick for 48 hours after symptoms stop. Wash laundry in hot water. Cook shellfish thoroughly and wash fruits and vegetables.

Norovirus numbers in Minnesota remain "higher than usual" and likely will for some time, according to the state's department of health.

Cases of norovirus are spiking in the U.S. along with other illnesses in what some are calling a “quad-demic” of viruses. Often referred to as the stomach flu, noroviruses aren’t actually part of the same class of viruses as influenza.
