The Laken Riley Act passed the House on Tuesday afternoon, marking the first piece of legislation out of the GOP-controlled Congress, as Republicans seek to fulfill a campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration.

The House voted on Tuesday to pass a GOP-led bill to require detention of undocumented migrants charged with certain crimes, but the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate in a sign of the challenges facing Republicans despite controlling both chambers of Congress.

The House of Representatives is poised to vote on the Laken Riley Act on Tuesday after it easily passed last year.

The bill, named for a nursing school student who was murdered by a man in the country illegally, passed the House last year. The new Republican-controlled Senate is expected to take it up Friday.

The immigration bill, which garnered 48 Democratic votes, passed 264-159.
