Racine teen dies after Lake Michigan drowning; family speaks out
RACINE, Wis. - A 15-year-old Racine teenager died after she was rescued from Lake Michigan last week. The Racine Sheriff's Office said the teen, now identified as Shaylani Williams, went under while swimming at Carre-Hogle Park and did not resurface on Thursday, July 31. She was later pulled from the water approximately 20 feet from shore.
Teen drowns in Lake Michigan
So far in 2025, 52 people have drowned in the Great Lakes, said Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project executive director Dave Benjamin. Of these drownings, 23 were in Lake Michigan. Since 2010, 1,386 people have drowned in the Great Lakes, and in 2024, 94 people died, the group said.
