United Airlines released a statement Monday after Flight 108, bound for Munich, Germany, had to turn back. The Boeing 787 with 219 passengers and 11 crew members had to retreat to Dulles International Airport after the left engine failed.

British Midland Flight 92 (Boeing 737‑400, January 1989): A fan blade fracture caused a fire in the left engine, and the pilots misdiagnosed the malfunction and shut down the right (healthy) engine, leading to loss of thrust and a crash which killed 47 on board. The incident became a cautionary tale in engine-identification training .

A United Airlines flight UA108, en route to Munich, made an emergency landing at Washington Dulles Airport on Friday following a left engine failure shortly after takeoff. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crew declared a Mayday,
